Dependents (Sponsored)
All companies registered in Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, or Fujairah must provide health insurance for every employee. Applies regardless of company size — from one employee upward.
Sponsors of domestic workers (housemaids, drivers, nannies) are required to provide health insurance. The premium can be as low as AED 225/year for basic mandatory coverage.
Business owners and investors on investor visas who are sponsored under their own company must also carry compliant health cover — even if they are not on a payroll.
While dependent family members are not currently mandatory under the NE law, employers and sponsors are strongly encouraged to include them. Many insurers offer family group rates.
Implementation Phases
Phase 1 — 2024
Companies with 100 or more employees in the Northern Emirates were required to enroll all staff in an approved health insurance plan.
Phase 2 — 2025
The mandate extended to companies employing between 11 and 99 people. Full compliance required before year-end.
Phase 3 — 2026
All remaining private sector employers — including micro-businesses and domestic worker sponsors — must be compliant. No exemptions.
